The Hugo Awards

The Hugo Award, named after Hugo Gernsback, is given annually by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). The award is administered by the committee of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) held that year. The award is determined by nominations from the membership and the winner is determined by a vote of the memebership. (See the WSFS Constitution for more details.)

This listing includes three additional types of awards: the Campbell Award, Special Awards given by the Committee, and the Gandalf Award.

The John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the Best New Writer is not a Hugo. It is administered by the Worldcon Committee and determined by the same nomination and voting mechanism as the Hugo but it is sponsored by another organization. The award was originally sponsored by Conde Nast Publications. In 1979 sponsorship of the Campbell award was assumed by Davis Publications , and they are the current sponsors.

Special Awards are determined directly by the Worldcon Committee without any popular nominations or vote. It is meant to confer a special honor as determined by the committee.

The Gandalf Award was an award which, like the Campbell Award, was administered by the Worldcon Committee and determined by the Hugo nomination and voting mechanism, even though it was not a Hugo. It was sponsored by Lin Carter and S.A.G.A. However, it is no longer given.
