The request had been originally for gender transformations/mutations/swapping. This has expanded to include transvestites, transexual, cross dressing, and any other similar concept. This list in the most part was not compiled by me. I received the bulk of this from dnichols@goddess.csc.ti.com (Dan Nichols). He already has these lists compiled. I added some to them. This list has not been error corrected in any way. If I waited that long I would have never got to posting it. Any addition, modification, would be accepted Thank you all who replied to this. If the number of additions warrants, I may post again. BOOKS (poems, comics, short stories) (sorted by title) Subject: Gender swapping, transvestite, transexual, cross dressing A: ABNORMALS ANONYMOUS Stella Gray 1964 People with all kinds of kinky desires form a club. THE ABRAXIS MARVEL CIRCUS - Stephen Leigh 1990 A entertaining romp involving a 30ish rock`n`roller, a mysterious lady, a hermaphrodite bag person, a mortician with a flair for black comedy, an ex-carnie evangelist, a flasher prophet, a dwarf, and the world's grossest dead scientist. ACHILLES Mythology The great leaders of poetry and art as well as drama, among whom we have Homer, Statius, Aeschylus and Sophocles, would portray the adventures of the mighty Achilles in female dress. That is, the noble Achilles was known to be a female impersonator. A Roman poet wrote that his mother, the sea nymph Thetis, once dressed him in female garments, called him Pyrrha, taught him the art of femme mimicry and helped him adopt mannerisms of deception so that he could live as a woman among the 50 daughters of King Lycomedes. This enabled him to escape the military. This is but one written fact on female impersonation that has survived the many centuries. There is much written proof about Achilles in female dress even after the threat of military drafting was over! Across the Sea of Suns Gregory Benford ADONIS Mythology Adonis, a modern symbol of masculinity, was bridegroom to Aphrodite, but also served Apollo as a girl. THE ADVENTURES OF JULIAN ROBINSON - Anonymous Another Victorian novel. This one is a story of a young man who goes to live with his Aunt and cousins, and through a program of punishment and domination, is forced to live as a girl. Also published as "Gynocracy". THE ADVENTURES OF OLIVIA Comic The 1st issue of Jabberwocky Graphics' attempt at a Cherry Poptart type comic has a beautiful woman who has gone into the hospital for a sex-change, but apparently just to add some equipment and have "the best of both worlds". AGDISTIS Mythology The Phrygian Agdistis, whose followers castrated themselves and dressed as women, was a bisexual being that castrated itself to become female. ALIEN FLESH - Seabury Quinn 1977 Story of a young man who, because of a tragic accident, offers to take the place of a young Caucasian girl in a sheik's harem. The offer goes beyond what he had in mind and he winds up in the body of the dead girl. The story then tells of how he/she comes to except her life and of how she makes her way back to America and falls in love with her best friend. This story was written in the 50's, but wasn't published till after his death and still is enjoyable and in fact holds up better than some of today's writings. (LK) ALIEN WORLDS Comic Issue #8 includes "Stoney End" a story about a spaceship crashed on a horrible alien planet. Acid-secreting worms are eating into the ship and the outside air is non-breathable. Midshipman Franklin "Stoney" Stonewall comes out of his closet to face death woman-to-woman. The rest of the crew don't really pay much attention. One guy says "Gee Stoney, gay's one thing but did you have to go fairy princess on us?" ALL YOU ZOMBIES - Robert A. Heinlein 1959 from: THE UNPLEASANT PROFESSION OF JONATHAN HOAG Jane begins life with female sexual organs functional to bear a child, but the process is disastrously traumatic to those organs. The surgeons, doing the best they can to salvage something, discover that she also has an undeveloped set of male organs. Thus, they are able to change her into a functional, fertile male. As a result of the opportunities presented by a mysterious time traveler, Jane goes back in time, rapes herself, and becomes her own father and mother. Originally published in Fantasy & Science Fiction, March 1959. Also in the collection "6 X H". ALPHA FLIGHT Comic Walter Langowski, who turned into the huge beast Sasquatch, through a complicated series of events, loses his body and is trapped in Limbo. In issue #45 he gets returns to life in the body of a white Sasquatch which was a transformation of the recently deceased member Snow Bird. When he transforms back to human shape, he discovers he's got a female body now, which is apparently an amalgam of his own, Snowbird's and possibly someone else. "She" uses the name Wanda and retains the female form through issue #68, before becoming Walter again. ANOTHER FINE MYTH - Robert Asprin A hilarious, pun-filled fantasy about a young magician's apprentice who finds himself working with a demon who's lost his powers. There is a small scene where the apprentice disguises himself as a girl so they can get out of town. APHRODITOS Mythology The Cypriots worshiped a bearded Aphrodite called Aphroditos, with a woman's body and clothes, a beard and male genitals. When they sacrificed to Aphroditos they cross-dressed. ARCADIO William Goyen 1983 Arcadio, half man, half woman, half Texan, half Mexican, tells his/her story of growing up in the freak show. ARCHIE Comic Supposedly there was an Archie Giant around 1954 that contained a story featuring a "cross-dress" dance. All the boys went dressed as girls. B: BADGER Comic #40,41 center around "Sister Twister", an ex-nazi transexual who has had a sex-change and become a nun. #47 has Badger visiting Sister Twister's old convent, which houses a collection of "nuns" who are all men. Look for the chapter where he meets the foxy "lady". BLOOD NIGHT - Chet Williamson 1989 The hero has a series of ever more powerful, and finally terrorizing, "wet dreams". Not a very pleasant story, but has an interesting cross-sex twist at the end. Anthologized in "Hot Blood - Tales of Provocative Horror" Edited by Jeff Gelb and Lonn Friend. KM BLUE ANGEL NIGHTS Margarete von Falkensee 1986 A decadent novel of Germany in the 1920s. The main character, a womanizer, encounters a beautiful TV and his twin sister. BUZZ SAWYER Comic Reportedly had some episodes with cross-dressing in it. BY REASON OF INSANITY Shane Stevens 1979 A novel about a serial killer who is a master of disguise. Toward the end he finally catches on to the idea of dressing as a woman. If you can stand the gore, his masquerade is exciting. C: CALIGULA William Howard 1979 Novelization of Gore Vidal's screenplay for the Penthouse movie. At one point, Caligula decides he is no longer content to be the god Caligula. He wants to be a goddess too, so he declares he is the incarnation of Venus and starts appearing in public dressed as the goddess. He also has a sex romp, as Venus, with a young boy. (LK) Highly recommended for suspense lovers. (DN) CHANGELING - Graham Masterson 1989 A businessman becomes fascinated by a beautiful, but strange, woman in Amsterdam and gradually finds himself effected by her "curse". The Cluster Series Peirs Anthony CONTRARYWISE - Zohra Greenhalgh 1989 Has a race of people who change sexes at will. There is a lot of gender-blurring in this novel, mostly female-to-male. I found the book to be only average, but some might like it. (MP) Sequel is Trickster's Touch. Conundrum Jan Morris's autobiography THE CORNELIUS CHRONICLES - Michael Moorcock 1971 Very worthwhile reading for lovers of androgyny. The hero, Jerry Cornelius is very ambivalent sexually, and switches masculine and feminine roles often. Actually CDs only a few times, but it is still exciting to read. A FLORIDA ENCHANTMENT An 1891 novel by Archibald Ganter and Fergus Redmond. It was adapted into a play by Ganter in 1896 and was generally received as some of the worst trash ever on stage. A woman finds a magic seed that will transform her into a man and swallows it. A darky maid servant is similarly transformed and some of the so-called men in the play are changed into women. FLOWERING NARCISSUS - Thomas Scortia 1973 Honcho, a brutal biker is the only surviving human on Earth, so androids make a female clone of him to be his companion. Their bodies joined into one, becoming a hermaphrodite. As a result of Hermaphroditus' prayers to his parents, the spring exercised a like effect on all men who bather in it thereafter. THE HOLLAND WOLVES John Breckenridge Ellis 1902 An early novel about female cross-dressing. HOLLYWOOD ANDROGYNY book list Hotblood (Short story in) HOTEL WITH EMPTY ROOMS Harriet Gilbert A man is spending the summer at a nearly empty hotel and a pretty young "girl" arrives one night. I: I HAD A BROTHER IN ARMS Maarten 't Hart Actually a Dutch novel called "Ik had een wapenbroeder." Don't know whether it has been translated into English. The main character is drafted in the army. He falls in love with one of his fellow soldiers. During a leave the friend helps the main character to dress up. The main character thereupon feels that he would rather be a woman. The friend then loses interest because he is more interested in man. The main character shoots his friend "accidentally", during a shooting practice. The story is not told in a linear way but in flashbacks. The desription of the dressing is very well done, which is not to surprising given that the author likes to cross dress too. He recently appeared at the annual book gala dressed as a woman. The newspaper (NRC Handelsblad) showed his picture in the monday edition. He looked quite convincing, with a long evening gown and a wig and it took the other guests quite a while before they recognized him. 't Hart said to a reporter that he frequently dressed up at home, but that this was the first time that he appeared like this in public. I WANT WHAT I WANT Geoff Brown 1966 A novel told from the viewpoint of Roy/Wendy, a transsexual. Set in England, the story winds up depressingly (I guess they had to in the old days in order to satisfy the Decency Code), but on the way is some of the best TV fiction I've ever read. "Brown" has to be a transvestite. The lingering, adoring description of putting on the clothes, fantasizing about them, etc. are so vivid and true, that no outsider could have come up with such stuff. The plot's well developed, too. In her struggle for identity, then acceptance, Wendy leaves home , goes to live on her own , gets along pretty well ... the doubts and dangers of passing are beautifully laid out. There is one chapter in which Wendy meets her sister as Wendy for the first time. Initial shock and disapproval fades to acceptance and acknowledgement that Wendy really is very convincing and pretty. This is the cover blurb: I told myself that I must stop being ashamed. It was a dishonest feeling. Really I was glad that I was as I was. It would have been better to be a woman, but it was better to be a transvestite than to be a man. The book was actually produced as a movie, with Anne Heywood playing Roy/ Wendy. It's a shame that the role wasn't done by a professional female impersonator. The movie wasn't much of a commercial success, anyway, and you were always conscious that the "transformed woman" was actually a genetic woman to begin with. IDENTITY CRISIS - James Hogan 1981 Short story in Stellar 7. This takes place in a society where you travel by renting a body (sex and appearance your choice) in another city and having your mind transfered into it. In this instance a husband and wife both end up in bodies of the opposite sex. Quite good. THE IDENTITY MATRIX - Jack Chalker 1982 The Earth is invaded by beings who can switch minds with someone just by touching them. The hero, a middle-aged college professor, is switched first into the body of a 12 year old Native American girl and then that of a beautiful young woman. Although the author denies that this book is "about" sex change, it is certainly the closest of any of his novels. Recommended. (KM) IN DRAG Len Harrington 1968 Gene was just a normal married man, till he took a job as a model for - of all things - women's fashions. Then the hidden side of his nature came out. IN THE FACE OF MY ENEMY - Joseph H. Delaney 1985 The hero is given the ability to change his shape at will. Twice he changes himself into a woman. (KM) INFANTE'S INFERNO - G. Cabrera Infante 1979 Translated from the Spanish by Suzanne Jill Levine. A semi-autobiographical novel about the sensual education of a young journalist in Havana. He has some experiences with female impersonators. THE INFINITY BOX - Kate Wilheim In this story (in the collection by the same name), a woman has the ability to have her body possessed by her husband and one other man. Weird concept - Reverse possession. THE INTEGRATED MAN - Michael Berlyn In this one it is possible for a personality to be recorded on a chip and inserted in another's body (the technological equivalent of spiritual possession). Midway though the book, the principle male character briefly inhabits a female body and finds it very stimulating. ISHMAEL/SALLY FORTH SERIES - Justin Leiber Beyond Rejection 1980 Beyond Humanity 1987 Beyond Gravity 1988 The mind of Ishmael Forth is transfered into the body of the deceased spacer, Sally Cadmus. In honor of her, he decides to call himself Sally Forth. To help in piloting her ship, the original Sally had a 3 foot prehensile tail grafted on and now Ishmael is stuck with it. (KM) I WILL FEAR NO EVIL - Robert A. Heinlein 1970 A wealthy corrupt industrialist's brain is transplanted into a woman's body. J: JAPAN Mythology When the Sun Goddess met her unruly brother Susanoo, she dressed in male clothes. JIMMY OLSEN Comic #67 "Leslie Lowe, Girl Reporter" has Jimmy upset at not getting a raise. He quits, but is unable to get another job; everyone's looking for women. He dons the disguise of Leslie Lowe and hires on back at the Daily Planet, planning to be a terrible worker and make Perry White realize how much he misses Jimmy. Everything "she" does seems to turn out right and it's finally discovered that everyone knew it was him because he forget to take off his signal watch. #95 "Miss Jimmy Olsen" has Jimmy masquerading as a female to get the goods on a mobster. JOKER Comic There was apparently some talk about giving the Joker a transvestite tendency in "Arkum Asylum", and this was possibly hinted at in JLI Annual #2, where he was also quite effeminate. There has apparently been at least a couple of occassions where he used female disguises in Batman. JUPITER Mythology Jupiter changed himself into a female and posed as Diana. JUST BOYS James Farrell 1934 A short story with a feminine young boy who attends a dance as a girl and comes to a very bad end. K: KILLER IN DRAG Ed Wood, Jr. A tv novel from the infamous director (a tv himself) of Glen or Glenda. THE KING OF THE NIGHTCAP William Murray 1989 The third in Murray's series about a detective who frequents the Del Mar race track. The one has several characters pivotal to the plot who are gorgeous she-males. One is a beautiful Mexican singer who seduces the detective. THE KING WHO HAD TO BE QUEEN TOO Jonathan Winters 1988 Very strange, short short story about a king who had no queen and took to wearing women's clothes. Published in the collection "Winter's Tales." THE KREMLIN LETTER Noel Behn 1966 A spy novel which includes an aging drag queen. L: L'ASTREE D'Urfe 1614-1620 Celadon dresses himself as 'Orithee' in order to reach his beloved. THE LAND OF OZ - L. Frank Baum 1904 (Del Rey 1979) The lost Princess Ozma has been hidden in a very effective way; she's been changed into a boy. This is book 2 in the Oz series, the sequel to The Wizard of Oz. (KM) THE LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN Hubert Selby A novel about the seamy side of Manhattan. THE LAST WOMAN IN HIS LIFE Ellery Queen 1969 Another mystery where the butler didn't do it, but the chambermaid might have. HE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS - Ursula K. LeGuin 1969 A novel about a world where there are three sexes. A person can choose and change their sex at estrus (period of sexual receptivity). This is a classic and is on most lists of the best SF novels. THE LILITH FACTOR - Jean Paiva 1989 Before Eve, Adam had another wife. Her name was Lilith and she was pure evil. Her spirit has returned in several people, one of whom is a man. LITTLE BIG MAN Arthur Penn Little Horse, the effiminate Cheyenne brave, was a berdache. LLOYD LLEWELLYN Comic In a story entitled "#$@&!", Lloyd enlists the help of his friend, Mister Sister, who has the unique ability to assume the form of a man or woman. THE LONG ARM OF GIL HAMILTON - Larry Niven Takes place in a future in which they've developed a "complete" transsexualization procedure... i.e. you can have children afterwards. One of the characters in one of the stories is a young TS whose husband doesn't know. Niven portrays her with more sympathy than most other writers. LYTHANDE - Marion Z. Bradley The main character is a woman who masquerades as a man. I believe there have also been some short stories about her in other books. M: Mademoiselle De Maupin Theophile Gautier (trans) 1855 Takes its name from and is based on the 17th century actress who dressed as a man in order to seduce women. It is narrated by the poet D'Albert, who falls in love with "Theodore" (which is the name she is using), and is overwhelmed with self doubts, confusion, etc. This is an extraordinary novel of transvestic fantasy, culminating in sexual reversals of the most radical kind. MAD MAGAZINE Comic A few years back there was a comic that had a guy going up to a change machine in an airport. He put in his $5 and "ZAPP" he was changed into a woman. The Madness Season C.S. Friedman's (transform) THE MAJIPOOR CHRONICLES - Robert Silverberg Presents a series of short vignettes as experienced by a young lad of 14 years, Hissune. Hissune's "experiences" are through a special mind link to a huge archive of various person's memories, sort of like in the movie "Brainstorm" if you caught it a few years ago. In the first story: "Thesme and the Ghayrog", the first memory Hissune "experiences" via the link, the memories were stored by a lonely, isolated female human, Thesme, about her discovery and nurturing of an injured reptilian male humanoid. Well she cures his broken leg and he cures her loneliness by reaching out to her sexually. They make love repeatedly. Now, try and remember who is experiencing this again--yes, it's Hissune the 14 year old boy. Hissune relating his feelings after the "experience" says it was "incomprehensible" and "confusing". I'll say! MAMA'S BOY Linda Crockett Gray A new mainstream book with strong TV themes. It is a horror book, with the villain having a fixation on his female lawyer. He steals her stuff and erotically uses it. Not totally TV, but his fetish for her things is very like our feelings. Also at the end is a VERY unusual TV scene! MAN FROM PANSY Don Rice Story about the search for a murderer. It is very funny as this basically straight guy has to search through the world of female impersonators and act gay while doing it. This was written in the late sixties or early seventies. (LK) THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT Agatha Christie 1924 THE MAN WHO BECAME A WOMAN Sherwood Anderson 1963 Short story about a man who imagines he has become a woman. THE MAN WHO FOLDED HIMSELF - David Gerrold 1973 A mind bending trip though alternate worlds. As the hero gets further away from his home world, he meets versions of himself with greater and greater differences until he encounters the woman he would have been if he had been born female. Then things really get complicated. (This book is sometimes referred to jokingly as "The Man Who Fondled Himself".) (KM) THE MAN WHO WAS PREGNANT - Elizabeth A. Lynn 1977 A short little story about a man who mysteriously becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby. In the intro the author says when asked "what's it about?", she just changes the subject. First published in "Chrysalis 1" edited by Ray Torgeson and reprinted in 1981 in "The Woman Who Loved the Moon" by the author. THE MAN WITH A THOUSAND NAMES - A.E. Van Vogt A man is given the ability to exchange bodies but does not have the ability to choose which person he exchanges with. He ends up inhabiting many other bodies including a girlfriend's. THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais Many of the old comic operas have a lot of crossdressing scenes. This is one of my favorites. In case you don't already know, Cherabino, a very pretty young page, is asked to cross dress by a Countess and her maid. There is a really nice scene where they try clothes on him. This is a play published under the Penguin Classics label. Interestingly enough, the author is the same Beaumarchais who had the London run-in with our favorite TV, Chevalier D-Eon. THE MARSHAL'S OWN CASE Magdalen Nabb 1990 The seventh Marshall Guarnaccia mystery set in Florence, Italy. Here he investigates the murder of what appears to be a female, but turns out to have been a male transvestite prostitute. The police immediately round up all the male transvestite prostitutes for questioning. The Marshall finds the whole thing embarrassing, but, unlike his fellow officers, he begins to see through the makeup and dresses to the people underneath. MARSHMALLOW MASQUERADE Cynthia Blair 1987 One from a young adult series about twins Chris and Susan. In this one prom time is approaching and they get the bright idea to have Chris infiltrate "the enemy camp" and find out what boys really talk about, etc. So while Chris is "out with the flu", their cousin "Charlie Pratt" comes to visit and attend their school. THE MASQUERADERS Georgette Heyer 1979 A wonderful mainstream novel by the historical romance writer. It is about an older sister and her brother who exchange identities. Their father is a rogue. The brother obviously likes his role and does it well, though he is truly a male and attracted to women. It was in both hardback and paperback a few years ago. You'll enjoy the read. (KP) MASTER OF SPACE AND TIME - Rudy Rucker 1984 A strange novel about a guy who discovers the secret of everything and is able to cause anything happen he desires. At one point he decides what he really wants is a gorgeous female body. His feelings about his new body made me wonder if the author really feels that way. MATES Peter Kenna An Australian play featuring a drag queen as one of the central characters. Published in "Drag Show", Currency Press 1977. M. BUTTERFLY David Hwang A play based on the true story about a French diplomat who had a long affair with a Chinese opera star who was actually a transvestite. MEMOIRS OF AN EX-PROM QUEEN Alix Kates Shulman 1972 Tv/ts theme not verified. MERCY David L. Lindsey 1990 Suspenseful thriller about a serial killer stalking women that are part of an underground, bisexual, s&m group in Houston. One of the major characters turns out to be a transvestite. Only one scene of dressing but nice description of their feelings while getting dressed. NOT the typical connection with the murder you would expect. THE MESSIAH CHOICE - Jack Chalker 1985 In this book, Satan is a computer. At the end of the book the principle male character gets female genitals after his male ones are destroyed (a common Chalker theme - female characters with male genitals or male characters with female ones). METAMORPHOSES Ovid This ancient text recounts the stories of Tieresias and Hermaphroditus. Mindswap Robert Sheckley MIRROR IMAGE Lucille Fletcher 1988 A very different suspense novel in which an aging actress and her daughter are conned by some clever actors, some of whom cross-dress for their roles. Mirror Image Hunt MISCELLANEOUS Comic There were reportedly other comics with TS themes. A couple of stories have been reprted from some old sci-fi comics. One was an involved story about the first flight to Mars just as war ended life on earth. A man and woman were aboard. They crashed on landing and the woman wandered off in a daze and did not return for months. When she came to her senses and managed to reach the ship again she found another woman there. The man had dispaired because men had caused so much trouble through war and being a biological scientist, turned himself into a woman.. no explanation given. The other story was of a spaceman who went to another star and visited a planet. It was very earthlike and he fell in love with a woman there and married her. The only oddity was that he was never permitted to see the children of the planet. One day his curiosity got the best of him and he managed to peek into a nursery. He found a lot of children with snail shells on their back (apparent premise- they had evolved from snails). He rushed home to discover that his wife was now a man and waiting for him to turn into a woman (snails change sex). Miss High-Heels Grove(?) MISS HIGH-HEELS Anonymous A Victorian erotica novel. Dennis Evelyn Beryl, a young English aristocrat, is transformed under the supervision of his step-sister Helen, into a beautiful young woman. MISSION EARTH SERIES, BOOK 9 OR 10 - L. Ron Hubbard 1988. I don't have the whole series, so I'm not sure whether the TV episodes are in 9 or 10 or both, but there are some encounters with gay men who dress up. MR. FANCY-PANTIES Dick Dale 1968 About a "blond butch stud" who happens to wear lace frilly panties. MOONSTAR ODYSSEY - David Gerrold 1977 Novel about a far away planet whose denizens get to choose their sex at puberty. THE MORPHODITE TRILOGY - M.A. Foster The Morphodite 1981 The Transformer 1983 The Preserver 1985 The protaganist (The Morphodite) is able through a painful process to voluntarily transform his body. Each time she/he ends up as a younger member of the opposite sex. The descriptions of the transformations are quite graphic, but rather unpleasant. (KM) MOSQUITO - Richard Calder 1990 A sad and rather outre story of homosexual trans-something-or-other appeared in the July, 1990 issue of Omni. The theme of is described in the table of contents by "A transvestite thief is hired to scour the decadent and corrupt streets of the future city of Bangkok. Can s/he survive the lustful journey in the dangerous quest for the perfect doll?" There is a great deal of psychological pain in the story and it does make me wonder - why can't we ever, in the general press, read a story about a perfectly happy transvestite? (KM) A MOTHER AND TWO DAUGHTERS - Gail Godwin 1983 Another feminist utopia novel. In this one men can become "male mothers". MUCKALUCK Richard Andersen 1980 An ironic, blackly humorous novel that's the "Catch-22" of the American Indian wars. The Muckalucks were your everyday, happy-go-lucky band of Indians. They had their fine warriors, their crazy medicine men, and an occasional transvestite or two. MURDER BY LATITUDE Rufus King 1930 A "murder on a cruise ship" mystery that revolves around a young boy who is passed off as a girl to a woman who badly wants to have a child and can't have any of her own. THE MUSCLE SWAPPERS Barry Crandall 1968 An explosive twilight novel of drag balls and swap parties among gay lovers. MY DARLING LEA Clyde Ward 1969 By tracing the relationship between Shawn O'Brien, rugged, masculine and aggressively "normal" and Lee, a famous (or infamous, depending on one's point of view) "drag queen", Mr. Ward dramatically sets forth the conflict between normal, socially accepted modes of sexual behaviour and the shadow-world of the homosexual. The back dust-jacket has a photo of the author in drag. MYRA BRECKENRIDGE Gore Vidal 1968 A wild, weird foray into the chasm between the genders and between sanity and insanity. Myra is a sex changer out to take over Hollywood. MYRON Gore Vidal 1974 A sequel to Myra Breckenridge. N: NANA Emile Zola 1880 This novel supposedly contains one or two TV related scenes. NATURAL SELECTIONS Gloria Nagy 1985 A principle character is a TS, but the subject matter of the book was not "transsexualism". About a well to do southern family. Tells the story starting about two generations before the TS child is born. Then finishes with the TS later in life after the surgery. Starting before the TS is born by about two generations is to build the story of the family and how the child's eventual TS status affects it. The book is excellent. NERVE Dick Francis About a famous TV reporter (pun intended!) who has a psycopathic dislike of jockeys. He goes around sabotaging them. Because he is famous, at least one time he made up his face and put a scarf around it. He then wore his riding clothes which are unisex. Apparently he was quite pretty. There is little space devoted to this however. THE NEW GIRL FRIEND Ruth Rendell 1983 Winner of the 1983 Edgar Award for best mystery short story. About a woman who becomes involved with a tv with unfortunate results. Available in a collection with the same title. NIGHT-BOOK William Kotzwinkle 1974 This is a hodgepodge book of many different modern stories, tied together with Greek women telling stories. TV is featured several times. Among them is the ancient classic of effiminate boys dressing as the women of the city in order to kill their enemys and a tough cop dressing and obviously liking it. NIGHTWOOD Djuna Barnes 1937 Involves Dr. O'Connor who is an anti-Eliotian witch doctor or medicine man, half Circe half Ulysses, who wears women's skirts and wigs, and Robin Vote, who is described as "outside the 'human type' - a wild thing caught in a woman's skin". NINE LIVES - Ursula K. LeGuin 1976 Concerns a tenclone, 5 male and 5 female versions of one male original. Originally published in Bio-Futures by Pamela Sargent. NINJA HIGH SCHOOL Comic In issue #6 Sammi, a delivery boy, is prodded by his uncle into going on a date with Itchy-Koo. This upsets another suitor of Itchy's who gets into a ninja-type fight with Sammi. During the fight Sammi's shirt is torn, revealing female breasts. It turns out Sammi's father had boasted so much about the powerful son he was going to have, that he was unable to face people when he had a daughter, so he sent Sammi off the be raised by her uncle, never letting on that she was really a girl. THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST - Robert A. Heinlein In the last part of the book, the characters meet up with Lazarus Long and company... and it turns out that Andy Libby (one of Heinlein's recurring characters from his other works has become Elizabeth Long. And one of the protagonists falls in love with her. THE NUNNERY TALES Anonymous 1990 Fleeing a political purge, young Augustus dons women's clothes and seeks refuge at the convent of Ste. Claire. he is soon initiated into habits that are anything but religious. Discipline is a mixture of pain and pleasure. Authority is maintained through sexual punishment. And the only true religion is passion. O: THE OATHBOUND - Mercedes Lackey All I know about it is that is apparently has male to female transformation(s). It has a sequel "Oathbreakers". ON ICE T.J. MacGregor 1988 The third book in the MacCleary & St. James detective series. Haven't read it, but based on the cover blurb there is at least one scene where a woman (the villain?) is disguised as a man. THE OPERATION Alexander Goodwell 1967 A very small small-press novel about Chuck, who has "THE" operation. THE OPHIUCHI HOTLINE - John Varley A novel set in his "Eight Worlds" series where sex change is easy and common. In this novel, Changing is in the background, only directly mentioned a few times. The Vaffa characters are male and female clones of the same individual. IMHO, this one isn't as strong as his shorter works. I'd search this one out only if you have read his shorter works, and want more of the 8-worlds universe. OPTIONS - John Varley 1979 One of the best stories I've ever read. It was also an award winner. Varley's future has sex changes as common as changing your hair color. This story follows a lady who wants to try it as a man. It really looks into her feelings about the differences and how her husband reacts to the change. Highly recommended! Appeared in the collection "Blue Champagne." ORLANDO Virginia Woolf 1928 A fictional biography of a hermaphrodite who lives part of their life as a man and the rest as a woman. (?)Ozma of OZ Baum P: THE PASSION OF NEW EVE Angela Carter 1977 In this literary novel a group of women transform a man (Evelyn) into a beautiful woman (the Eve of the title). PASSION PLAY Jerry Kozinski 1979 Similar to Blind Date, but here the action is at a bar frequented by tvs and television executives. PENTHEUS Mythology After imprisoning Dionysus, Pentheus is inveigled into going up Mt. Cithaeron and spy on the Maenads, whom he suspected of sexual licence. While the women of his family, under the influence of Bacchic frenzy, roamed the mountains with the Maenads, Pentheus, disguised as a woman, climbed a tree to watch their revels. His mother and aunt saw him there and in their madness, thought him a lion and tore him to pieces. The Persistance of Vision John Varley THE PHANTOM OF KANSAS - John Varley Appeared in "Persistence of Vision". PHAZE DOUBT - Piers Anthony Another in the Prentice Adept series. It continues the admirable tradition begun earlier in the series of having one of the male characters emulate a woman character, even nude. One scene is particularly good, where the amoeba, Nepe forms a female skin over a male character to emulate a thirdbeautiful woman. PHYLUM MONSTER - Hayford Pierce 89 In the 24th Century, people are all genetically engineered. Baby models are marketed like cars and defective children can even be returned to the factory before they reach adulthood. Robert Clayborn designs exclusive models, with great success, until his 1st model, his own son, suddenly undergoes a bizarre metamorphosis. Everything then goes crazy, including the Martian rock entity, the Oneness, calling Clayborn to Mars, turning him into a woman, and setting him on a quest to find living bodies for millions of rocks, each carrying an individual "soul". THE PLEASURING OF RORY MALONE Charles Panati 1982 Psychic terror novel about a boy who can rape women psychically. He keeps searching for a girl to love him in a normal way. He thinks hes found one, but she is not a girl! This is a minor scene toward the end. PONTIFEX, REX, AND SON R. Austin Freeman Tv/ts theme not verified. POPE JOAN E.D. Rhoides 1886 An anti-clerical satire which doesn't stray much from the apocryphal history of the female pope. Pope Joan clearly becomes a fearful figure, a female transvestite who can alter the course of nature through her cross-dressing. PRIAPUS Mythology Archaic Greek vases show a virile Priapus with breasts. PRIDE OF THE BIMBOS John Sayles 1975 Novel about a barnstorming softball team who play in drag. THE PROCRUSTIAN PETARD - Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath 1977 Lured by the siren song of an abandoned planet, the Enterprise emerges with the sex of nearly everyone on board reversed. Short story in Star Trek: The New Voyages 2. (KM) PROTEUS UNBOUND - Charles Sheffield 1989 Sequel to Sight of Proteus. Not really a sex-change story, see Sight of Proteus comments. PUDD'NHEAD WILSON Mark Twain The villian in this classic CDs to carry out his nefarious deeds! Take Daisy Mae, the big blonde stud with a penal record who always wore drag. THE QUEEN IS DEAD Glenn Kezer 1979 A murder mystery that opens up with the discovery of a beautiful young woman's body in a snowman, but "she" turns out to be a "he". Takes place in a New England town that seems to be rather heavily populated by transvestites and transexuals and someone is murdering them. Also features an interesting twist of a real female posing as a transvestite hooker. R: RALLY ROUND THE FAG Don Holliday 1967 A "Man from C.A.M.P." novel. Agent Jackie Holmes gets in drag to impersonate a liquidated female spy. RANCHO MARIA Jerry Oster This one has a fair amount of TV in it, including a town mayor (GG) who likes to have her lovers dress up in female roles and play kinky games with her. Not much description, but VERY amusing. (MP) RANMA 1/2 Rumiko Takahashi (Comic) A Japanese comic. A young boy, Ranma, discovers that when dowsed with hot water he turns into a girl. For some strange reason his father, when dowsed with hot water, turns into a Panda. REFUGEE, VOL 1 OF BIO OF A SPACE TYRANT - Piers Anthony 1983 Cross-Dressing is a central theme in this book, both male and female. However, the theme is not continued in the remaining books of the series. REGIMENT OF WOMEN - Thomas Berger 1973 A very strange book. Set in a future where the women rule and the men fill what we consider the female roles. To the extent that men get breast implants, and wear dresses, makeup, etc. There are some "transvestites", men who secretly wear pants, and a few women who secretly wear dresses. RETROGRADE SUMMER - John Varley Appeared in "Persistence of Vision". THE RICH AND THE BEAUTIFUL Ruth Harris 1978 One of the Beautiful People schlock books. The heroine has a manservant named Dante who is gay, beautiful and looks just like her. He likes to dress in her clothes and she likes to see him dressed in her clothes. Unfortunately, I've just told you almost as much as Ruth Harris tells you. Dante's character is developed further, but this theme is not. RINGS OF ICE - Piers Anthony 1974 The world is threatened by a flood and some of the survivors band together. One of the central characters is a beautiful TV named Gordon/Gloria. RINGS OF THE MASTER SERIES - Jack Chalker 1987-8 Lords of the Middle Dark x Pirates of the Thunder Warriors of the Storm Masks of the Martyrs Gods of the Twilight River of the Dancing Gods Jack Chalker ROAD MAP - F.M. Busby A man dies, to find himself reincarnated with the memories of his former life intact. He finds himself 50 years in the past, reincarnated in the body of his future wife. In the collection "Getting Home" ROBOT ADEPT - Piers Anthony 1988. In this Book Five of the Apprentice Adept series, part of the plot involves disguises to fool the bad guys. Disguise as woman characters is included. I believe in the last two books, the switch between the two universes is always to the opposite sex. ROBOTECH: THE NEW GENERATION - Jack McKinney 1986 #10 Invid Invasion #11 Metamorphosis #12 Symphony of Light Novelization of the popular Japanese animated science fiction series. In "The New Generation" there is a freedom fighter named Lancer who works undercover as a popular female singing star, Yellow Dancer. A few of the people who know of the dual role notice that he/she is really like two different people. After his assignment, he continues the dual role. ROCKABYE BABY Stephen Gresham 1984 About a "nice old man" who puts on a nurse's uniform to get little girls to let him in the house. ROSE OF THE PROPHET - Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman 1988 The Will of the Wanderer The Paladin of the Night The Prophet of Akhram The first volume of this trilogy has a hint of a cross-dressing flair to it, one of the principles, a very feminine looking wizard is trapped and mistaken for a female. He ends up almost getting sold as a slavegirl and actually winds up as a wife in a harem!! This theme is downplayed and apart from the main theme of the book, but none the less makes good reading. RUSHES John Rechy 1979 Another novel of the seemier side of homosexuality, featuring transvestites. S: THE SAGA OF THE PLIOCENE EXILE - Julian May 1981- This series is worth reading in its own right. To spice it up, there is a very minor character who appears fleetingly in places throughout. He dresses like Queen Elizabeth. SANDMAN Comic In the latest series by this name, there is a character, Choronzon, who is wearing stockings and garters in his first appearance. Also the character Desire is unusual. "One body, one sex is not enough for Desire" and (s)he apparently changes at will. Sarrasine Balzac (Hermorp) THE SATIN PRINCE Lee White 1966 A tv novel. THE SCIENCE FICTION OF SEX CHANGE - Tom Rainbow Actually a speculative article, but worth reading. Appeared in a 1985 issue of "Isaac Asimov's SF Magazine" (I *think* it was July, but I'm not positive) SCIMIDAR Comic Vol III, #1 has Scimidar visiting a female impersonator club. SEASON OF THE WITCH - (G.) Hank Stine 1968 A man is transformed into a woman as punishment for rape and learns to like his new role. Second_Serve Renee Richards autobiography SECRET WARS II Comic In issue #4 the Beyonder changes his body to that of a female, but only for one panel. THE SEDUCTION Art Bourgeau 1988 Primarily centered around a female TV, there is one somewhat shocking instance of male TV, though suspected by someone of our backgrounds. THE SEDUCTION OF PETER S. Lawrence Sanders 1983 Has a chapter where the hero, a gigolo, has fallen for a beautiful client. However, it's not to be! This occurs in chapter 49 and is mentioned again in chapter 54. SEDUCTIONS - Ray Garton 1984 Succubus-like creatures that have been living underground for centuries impart incredible sexual/sensual pleasure as they totally devour people. Then they assume the identity/body, which can be male or female, of a fantasy from their victim's mind. SERAPHITA Balzac 1835 Seraphita is an ambiguous being who resembles, both in nature and in spirit, the transvestic shamans of earlier times. His sex changes continuously and he wears 'a formless garment wich resembles equally a woman's robe and a man's mantle'. SHE AND I Eileen Lottman 1991 A strange novel about two siamese-twin sisters. One of the twins, Sheila, marries Roger, who has an Uncle Maudie, "a terribly nice, genial man who dressed in smart designer gowns made to order, wore stiletto-heeled pumps that were hand-made for him in Italy, and had a full-time live-in valet who did his makeup." SIGHT OF PROTEUS - Charles Sheffield Set in a future where total form-changing is possible. They actually put out catalogs of new forms, not just male-female, but avian forms, etc. It's a much more complicated process than in Varley's future; different forms take different amounts of time and carry different risks and life expectancies. Changes are accomplished by hooking you up to machines and chemical baths. Your body is actually changed. Doesn't really involve sex-changing, but they do talk with one woman who has changed to a male form and they mention that most people who try both forms usually prefer the female form. Sequel is Proteus Unbound. SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Thomas Haris I highly recommend it for its own sake. The villain, a serial killer, has TS motives for his crimes. However, his fantasies and realities are so grotesque, there is little or no excitement in reading about them. (MP) SILENT CITY - Elisabeth Vonarburg 1988 "A metamorphic journey into disturbing possibilities of gender, social order, and genetic science." Clive Barker SPENCE AT THE BLUE BAZZAR Michael Allen SPLENDORA Edward Swift 1978 This novel tells the story of Timothy John Coldridge who leaves a steamy East Texas town, unhappily, at the age of eighteen. Now, at thirty-three, he returns with a dazzling companion, Miss Jessie Gatewood. Draped (and impeccably accessorized) in Victorian finery and drenched in social graces, she takes the town by storm. While it might be said that he arrived with her, it might also be said that he arrived within her, since Timothy John and Jessie Gatewood are the same person. Aided at every delectable turn by a cast of relentless eccentrics, our heroine endures spectacular (and distinctly different) adventures, including genteel romance, high drama, torment, ecstasy, and a technicolor ending. THE STORY OF MARQUISE-MARQUIS DE BANNEVILLE - Abbe de Choisy A novel by de Choisy who himself was a notorious cross-dresser. It recounts the history of a boy, known as "La belle Marianne", who has been dressed as a girl from earliest infancy and has no idea of his real sex. Clamped in iron bodices, he grows into a model young lady. Marianne eventually falls in love with a handsome young man, dressed in the effiminate style of the period. They make gentle love and soon marry, but the potentially explosive nature of such a relationship is defused when the young man turns out to have been, all the time, a girl in masquerade. THE STYX COMPLEX Russell Rhodes 1977 About a genius of the cosmetics world, Ava Bardoff, who is over 60 but looks 28-35. Made into a film of the same name starring Roman Polanski. THESMOPHORIAZOUSAE Aristophanes 411 B.C. (or Women at the Festival of the Thesmophoria) A play about the battle of the sexes, in which the women's actions are directed against a single male target - the tragic poet, Euripides. In the privacy of their ritual enclosure, the women have determined to exact vengeance from Euripides, whom they charge with the offenses of misogyny and slander in his dramatic portrayal of women. As his counterplot, Euripides first tries and fails to persuade the effeminate tragic poet, Agathon, to go in women's dress to infiltrate the women's rites and argue in his defense. Hence, he must finally send his own kinsman. Dressed as a woman with a costume and accessories from Agathon's own wardrobe, shaved and depilated on stage, the kinsman Mnesilochus makes his way to the Acropolis to mingle unnoticed with the other women and to carry out the mandates of the master plotter. He is ultimately unmasked and Cleisthenes, the effeminate politician and friend of the women goes off to bring back the Scythian policeman. Euripides, at last, reconciles himself with the women, and dressed now as an old procuress, he succeeds in diverting the policeman with a comic, not a tragic, ploy - the dancing girl, so that he and the kinsman can escape. THE THIEF'S JOURNAL Genet 1949 Deals with homosexual transvestites. THE THIRD SEX - Alan Brennert 1989 Originally appeared in Pulphouse 3, reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction: Seventh Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Dozois, St. Martin's Press, New York, 1990 I hardly know where to start. If you have ever experienced gender confusion or if you know someone who has, if you're male, if you're female, drop what you're doing, or set it down gently if it might break, and proceed directly to your nearest bookstore or library and get a copy. You might get the impression that I liked this story. That is not true. I loved it. I hesitate to say very much about the story itself. It should be sufficient to say that the protagonist suffers from what may be the ultimate in gender confusion. THOR Mythology In Norse mythology, Thor was a female impersonator. In one story, the Giant Thrym had Thor's hammer Mjolnir stolen while he slept and hid it eight miles under the earth. He agreed to return it if Freya was delivered to him as his bride. Freya was unagreeable, so Heimdahl suggested they send a phony Freya. Thor dressed in Freya's bridal garments and Loki travelled as her bridegroom to trick Thrym and get Mjolnir back. THOUSAND-STAR - Piers Anthony 1980 This book features the female half of twins, who because of the sexual and social mores on her home planet, masqueraded as a boy most of her life. Tiresias Greek Mythology Besides TV, there is a famous mythological TS story about Teiresias; namely, he stumbled on a pair of copulating snakes (this is the same symbol as in the caduceus of Hermes & the modern medical profession) killing the female in process. He was "punished by being turned into a woman" and later was called on to settle an argument between Zeus & Hera as to whether men or women enjoyed sex more. He backed Zeus's contention that women like it better, and Hera blinded him. (Zeus gave him prophecy in recompense; somewhere in all of this he had his gender re-reassigned, probably "automagically" at the end of seven years or something like that.) The point of Zeus' position is that it was "justification" for keeping women in purdah (not the Greek word for it, but it gives the right idea.) A story published in the Britsh magazine 'Sience Fiction Monthly' ('70's?) where people could change sex at wish by taking as a pill. In this story all people are both sexs. The stroy centres on two young people who are in love and regularly change sex (not always a boy/girl partnership, sure gets rid of homophobia) until one day one of them turns into a completely different sex all together. It turns out that there are not just two sexes but many different sexes and the couple are off on a voyage of discovery. Authors in general: Butler, Octavia Chalker, Jack Varley, John Lois McMaster Bujold Other related stories hardwired Walter John Williams Jan Morris' Autobiograhical book about her sex change Christine Jorgensen's book No Woman Born by C.L. Moore The Mystery of the Young Gentleman and What Did You Do During the Revolu- tion, Grandma? by Joanna Russ Bloodchild by Octavia Bulter JOHN VARLEY'S UNIVERSE A lot of John Varley's short stories take place in a future where sex changes are simple and cheap. These stories don't have that as the main theme, but at least mention a character who has had a sex change. Equinoctial 1980 Beatnik Bayou 1980 A) A significant amount of Varley's works take place in a consistent future where sex changes are as common as changing hairstyles. Several more of his stories may contain mention of this theme that I'm not aware of at this time. B) Jack Chalker frequently uses body transformations and sex-changing as plot devices. All of the above reportedly contain sex-changing in some form but I haven't read all of them to verify it yet. This is hopefully a complete list of stage performances, television shows, etc., containing tv/ts themes or at least tv/ts characters. I pulled this together from several different lists floating around, adding some of my own. Ones marked "not verified", I have not been able to verify either its existence or that it contains tv/ts themes/characters. These are from "legitimate" film, etc. There are many pornographic films produced starring she-males, showing men dominated and forced into becoming women, etc. A significant part of this (especially the early things) were taken from the book "What A Drag - Men As Women And Women As Men In The Movies" by Homer Dickens. Any additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated. LET ME DIE A WOMAN An exploitative documentary about transsexuals. May be hard to find as it was not widely released. 1979 MILTON BERLE INVITES YOU TO A NIGHT AT LA CAGE Milton Berle hosts an evening of entertainment at La Cage in Las Vegas. PARIS IS BURNING "Aching to Be a Prima Donna, When You're a Man" by Vincent Canby (from The New York Times, 12 March 1991, p. C13) It's tough enough trying to survive in our society as a black male, but "if you're black and male and gay, you have to be stronger than you can imagine." So advised the father of one of the Harlem drag queens who are the subjects of Jennie Livingston's "Paris is Burning," the very fine feature-length documentary opening today at the Film Forum 1. Style is the weapon of the self-styled queens, their consorts, and their entourages. Style is all-pervasive in speech, vocabulary, manner, dress and attitude. Style is a way of appearing to be "real," that is, a way of appearing to be something that, it is often apparent, one isn't. "Paris is Burning" is the name of just one of the drag balls that Miss Livingston shot in the course the film's two-year production. There are also interviews with some of the more notorious (or, as they like to describe themselves, legendary) queens whose lives Miss Livingston studies with the curiosity of a compassionate anthropologist. Among others, there is Pepper Labeija, who says, "I've been around now for two decades, reigning." Pepper's life, like those of most of the other people in the film, revolves around the drag balls that have much more to offer than simply the spectacle of men dressing up in women's clothes. Drag comes in all sizes, shapes, and, of course, styles. The competition for prizes is fierce in categories that go far beyond Femme Queen Realness, featuring the elaborate showgirl costumes that one usually associates with drag balls. In the Town and Country divisions, contestants dress and upper-middle-class men and women as they might appear in the magazine of that name. Other categories include Executive Realness (the costume is that of Wall Street), Military, Schoolboy/Schoolgirl and Bangee Realness. Bangee contestants adopt the look and manner of young street punks whose favorite targets are the sort of gay men who "walk the ball," that is to say, compete for prizes. "Paris is Burning" is more than spectacle, though. Miss Livingston's interviews reveal a way of living that is both highly structured and self-protective. There is a system of "houses" to which the young men more or less apprentice themselves. The houses are associations of friends, presides over by a "mother" like Pepper Labeija, that provide a substitute for a family. Houses, says one interviewee, are gay street gangs. Willi Ninja, the head of the House of Ninja, is a lithe, articulate young man who happens to be a master in the art of "voguing," in which dancers attempt to top each other by using gymnastics and the gestures of high-fashion models. Associated with "voguing" is "shade," defined as the "verbal abuse, criticism and humiliation of a rival or competitor." "Throwing shade" is what they do when they do it. This is the arcana of the drag world. "Paris is Burning" reveals the temper of that world obliquely. At the beginning of the film the drag queen talk much in the manner of would-be starlets. They tend to gush. "The balls," say Pepper Labeija, "are our fantasies of being superstars." As the film goes on, the talk becomes more melancholy. Carmen, a transsexual, discusses her operations. Venus Xtravaganza, who is light-skinned and blond, dreams of finding Mr. Right, who would also be rich. Dorian Corey, a drag queen of a certain age, sits in front of a mirror applying makeup. Dorians says that once he wanted to make his mark in the world. Now he believes he will have made his mark if he just gets through it. There is a lot of common sense and natural wit behind the role-playing. Yet there is also a terrible sadness in the testimony. The queens knock themselves out to imitate the members of a society that will not have them. Paris is Burning. Produced and directed by Jennie Livingston; cinematography by Paul Gibson; edited by Jonathan Oppenheim; co-produced by Barry Swimar; released by Off-White Productions. At Film Forum 1, 209 West Houston Street. Running time: 78 minutes. Unrated. With: Pepper Labeija, Willi Ninja, Octavia Saint Laurent, Venus Xtravaganza and Paris Dupree. PRELUDE TO A KISS By a lucky accident, last night on A & E I ran across an interview with the actor Bernard Hughes. He is currently appearing on Broadway in a play called "Prelude to a Kiss". As the play opens, a young man and woman are getting married, but their wedding is interrupted by a strange old man (Bernard Hughes) who insists on kissing the bride. It gradually becomes clear that something very strange has happened, the old man and the beautiful young bride have exchanged souls. In the interview they tried to avoid giving away too much of the plot, but Hughes does say that it is a very romantic play. It sounded as though the groom finds that he is in still in love with his bride's soul despite its strange new home. (KM) PRIVATES ON PARADE A musical in NYC starring Jim Dale. The ad shows him as a private in a feather boa. If I'm not mistaken "Privates on Parade" was the name of a British army show that featured drag acts. He had taken something that changed him into other people. One of the last ones was a beautiful girl. Dobie didn't want him to change back. DOCTOR, DOCTOR 11/1/90. Mike's brother wasn't invitied to some dinner for their dad. His brother feels he was left out because he's gay. Mike plans to have the three of them meet at his place for dinner so they can talk. When his brother arrives, he finds Mike decked out in a pink dress, high heels, etc. Turns out their dad has a wreck on the way over and the rest of the show focuses around them and their mother at the hospital. DREAM ON HBO's 1990 "Adult" comedy. The main character's best friend hosts a local television talk show and in the first episode there is a brief segment during the filming of an episode focusing on "Lawyers in Lingerie." The guests include 3 women and 1 man who talks about wearing a powder blue gown under his suit in court. FALL GUY There was an episode where Scott Baio was a pretty convincing girl. But when the hero's sidekick (don't remember his name) dressed up, they fell back on the "man in a dress" cliche. This was reported by Kristi M. FANTASY ISLAND Another hazy one. It had a man changing into a women, maybe his wife. It was not what he expected from his fantasy. FLINTSTONES Dr. Frankenstone Gazoo turns Barney into woman. GOODBYE CHARLIE A tv pilot with Suzanne Sommers based on the movie of the same name. GOOD GRIEF This is one of FOX network's 1990 series starring Howie Mandel. In the 10/7/90 episode Tom Poston joins the cast as Ernie's pal Ringo Prowley, a jack-of-some-trades who steps in as a minister to preside over the burial of a man in a dress. This is verbatim from TV Guide, I didn't see the episode. The 12/16/90 episode featured a dream sequence with the characters in the "I Love Lucy" show. Raoul played Ethel. GRAND SLAM In the 2-14-90 episode, Gomez is jumped by a female impersonator as they are leaving jail. HAPPY DAYS Henry Winkler once attended Fonzie's funeral as his mother. HEARTLAND Two episodes during 1989 had boys in skirts (one was a quick walk on in a seedy hotel in NY). HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN Did not see this one but saw TV Guide description, which said that the angels assistant was swapped with an actress. HILL STREET BLUES There was a recurring character, Erwin, who was an attorney and I, think, a judge for a while, who appeared in dresses several times as part of some therapy he was going through. HINGE & BRACKET George Logan and Patrick Fyffe presently dominate the comedy scene on the BBC as two elderly ladies, Dr. Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket, who sit and reminisce about their days when Dr. Hinge was the conductor and Dame Hilda the principal soprano with the Rosa Charles Opera Company. HIS & HERS A 1990 comedy about two marriage counselors married to each other. The opening episode, 3-5-90, has their secretary telling them about a call from a lady who found her husband in her garter belt and stockings. THE HITCHHIKER A vain plastic surgeon does work on a TS that doesn't work out quite like he (the surgeon) would have liked. It was somewhat predictable, but the treatment of the TS was good, I thought. (KM) HOOPERMAN There was an episode where a killer Hooperman had sent to prison was out and looking for him. Turns out he had a sex change while in prison. In the 12-21-88 episode, Hooperman poses as a transvestite hooker to hunt down a slasher who has been attacking tv's. HUNTER In one episode there is a brief scene with one of the other cops and a black tv who was arrested for using the women's restroom. The 1-23-91 episode has Christopher Morley as the owner of a health spa. He works the front desk in drag. IN LIVING COLOR The 2-24-91 episode had a takeoff on the "milk makes bodies grow" commercial, with Keenan as a grown-up Marsha Warfield. THE KIDS IN THE HALL A new HBO comedy series from Toronto with an all male cast that "loves to do drag" according to the Sunday NY Times. From the photograph the drag is more realistic than Monty Python. THE KOPYKATS Rich Little joined Tony Curtis in drag in a scene from Some Like It Hot in a 1972 episode. LA LAW Pilot movie for the series, with Ts secretary coming out at her boss' funeral. Very convincing. 4/25/91 - a transsexual sues the modeling agency that fired her because of her sex change. The bar has women dancing on the bar and Lenny's brother has been putting the make on an attractive women at the bar. When Lenny shows up, the woman jumps up and says "Lenny!" When he doesn't seem to recognize her, she says "It's me, Virgil." Virgil is now Beverly. THE LOVE BOAT An episode where MacKenzie Phillips plays a sex change. THE LOVE BOAT: A VALENTINE VOYAGE A made-for-tv movie, Feb. 1990. Joe Regalbuto and Ted Shackleford play jewel thieves who are trying to pass their goods on to an island fence. Because Regalbuto has been identified, he disguises himself as a woman. MARRIED ... WITH CHILDREN The episode entitled "Her Cups Runneth Over" has a man walking around in stockings and high heels. MASH Corporal Klinger almost always appeared in female dress. MEDICAL CENTER(?) MIAMI VICE Pilot for tv show, features Izzy, as murderous hit man, who cross-dresses to double cross MILTON BERLE The father of female impersonation. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE One episode of the new edition of this series involves a European princess who has been marked for assassination. Coyote, the assassin, is a woman and she disguises herself as a man to gain access to the big gala where she plans to do the hit. MONTY PYTHON Frequently features cross-dressing. MOONLIGHTING In one episode Herbert poses as a stripper for Maddie's fiance's bachelor party when she fails to show up. Quite convincingly, too. MORK AND MINDY Featured Robin Williams in a number of disguises, including that of a little old lady and as Mindy herself. MR. BELVEDERE The 2-3-89 episode had Mr. B, George, and the oldest son all dressed as women to catch a high-heeled shoe thief. The son looked pretty good! Can't say too much for the others though. There's a good bit at the end where the son asks to borrow a pair of gloves. Seems he just discovered why putting on fake nails with Crazy Glue isn't such a great idea! MUNSTERS two episodes: 1. Grandpa makes a potion to change Herman into a texan and himself into a beautiful women. They think Lily is seeing other men. Eddie drinks the potion at the end and is turned into a 12 year old girl. Grandpa said that with amount he drank, he won't change back for a week. 2. MURPHY BROWN The 2-19-90 episode has Murphy and Corky going undercover as hookers to expose a land commission fraud. The character played by Joe Regalbuto was "really" eager to pose as a hooker. He recently co-starred in The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage, playing most of the movie in drag. The show has a running gag on different, inappropriate secretaries. In the 4-30-90 episode the secretary was a TVer - in this case an obvious cross-dressed male. NBC FOLLIES Sammy Davis, Jr. and Arte Johnson appeared in drag. NIGHT COURT In one episode an old buddy of Dan Fielding's is in town to get married. Turns out the buddy is now a post-op, played by Craig Russell, and is marrying a male. All though the show is a comedy Russell's character was not the butt of the jokes, that honor went to John Larouquette's Fielding. The 1/10/90 episode had several female impersonators appearing in court. A disapproving old man had trashed their dressing room and the police had confiscated their costumes. At the end of the show they're all dressed up and heading back to the club. A couple of them looked really good. NUMBER 96 An Australian series from the 70's. This was the basis of the US show of the same name. It was a very controversial series when it first appeared, dealing with taboo subjects like homosexuality and incest, and it was the first to show naded breasts on television. It featured a buxom young woman with the stage name of Abigail who played a character called Abigail in the series. In One episode one of the characters fell in love with Carlotta, not knowing that she is in fact a TS who is the main attraction at 'Les Girls', a real-life all-male cabaret show. NUMBER 96 4/10/80 - 1/2/81 Life at Number 96 Pacific Way, a Southern California apartment complex, was full of sex, gossip, and all sorts of miscellaneous personal problems. The people who lived there had bizarre lives. Among the residents was psychologist Robert Leon, also a transvestite. OHARA Occasionaly featured a tv informer. OPEN HOUSE In one episode Ted and Linda agree to let Scott fix them up with two "normal" friends. At a party one of the people Ted meets is a gorgeous tv. PARTNERS IN CRIME At least one episode featured female impersonators. PERFECT STRANGERS On the 3-31-89 episode, Larry (Mark Linn-Baker) dresses up as a woman to prevent one of their friends, Lydia, from marrying a golddigging con artist that Balki had set her up with. There was also reportedly another episode with a tv theme. POINT OF VIEW P.O.V., a critically acclaimed series of independent non-fiction films, returns to PBS on June 26th with 12 wekks of new programming. Films include "Metamorphosis: Man Into Woman", an intimate look at a man's sex-reassignment surgery. QUANTAM LEAP A 1989 sf show about a scientist who finds himself "quantum-leaping" through time popping into other people's bodies in order to right something that didn't happen quite the way it should have. In the 2nd season opener, "What Price Gloria", Sam will find himself inhabiting the body of a female secretary in the pre-lib early '60s. The 1/10/90 episode, "Another Mother", has Sam leaping into the body of a divorced mother of three in order to stop her 15-year-old son from running away and being murdered. An interesting sidelight was that her youngest daughter could not only see that Sam was a man, not her mother, but she could also see his hologram friend. The 11/2/90 episode, "Miss Deep South", has Sam popping into a beauty contestant. The 3-6-91 episode, "8 1/2 Months", has Sam as a pregnant teenager. There was also an episode where he popped into a vice cop who was working in drag. RED DWARF Not sure, but I think the series had them going into an alternate universe where the men had the babies. The main character has sex with his opposite as a female, but since he is in her universe, he is the one who gets pregnant. THE REPORTERS The 2-4-89 broadcast of Fox network's scandal show featured a special segment on a transsexual's struggle to be herself. The TS is somebody named Bill Campbell (if I remember correctly). He's British, married to an American woman and they have two young children. The first part of the show seemed sympathetic and, from what I know, fairly accurate. But at the end they revealed that Campbell is wanted on several counts of fraud. He's accused to defrauding a number of people by getting them to invest in a phony company. Very poorly received among the gender community. The general feeling is that it was a sad disservice to the TG community. RICHARD PRYOR SHOW (?) There was a skit where a construction worker gets off work and starts singing "I've Gotta Be Me" as he undresses to reveal a woman's bikini, takes off his hat to reveal long beautiful hair and puts on high heels. ROBOTECH A Japanese animated science fiction series. In "The New Generation" there is a freedom fighter named Lancer who works undercover as a popular female singing star, Yellow Dancer. After his assignment, though, he continues the dual role. SANTA BARBARA Starting 11/14/88 this soap has a continuing transvestite character. Bunny used to be a member of the Mafia. He used female disguise to escape from some killers, but discovered he enjoys it. So far he is portrayed as a very nice, likeable person. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE The Church Lady is a regular of the new show. SAVED BY THE BELL A silly high-school show on CBS. The 12/16/90 episode had the nerdy kid dressing as a cheerleader to help in a skit. SHE'S THE SHERIFF The 2-18-89 episode had a scene where the 2 male cops dressed in drag and were kidded by the other cops about it... but the 2 "girls" started to compare who had the better pair of legs by raising their dresses. SIMON & SIMON "Ain't Gonna Get It From Me, Jack" 11-5-88 has the Simons helping a Morton Downey-like talk show host who's receiving death threats. TVs and TSs are both mentioned numerous times and at one point a tv makes an attempt to shoot him. SISTER KATE On the 1-7-99 episode they are having an awards ceremony for one of the boys. Before the ceremony, the mayor mentions to Sister Kate that "those stories about me and women's undergarments are greatly exaggerated." Then he proceeds to adjust his bra. SOAP Jody, played by Billy Crystal, is gay. He frequently dressed as a woman and went in for a sex change, but changed his mind at the last minute. Billy Crystal also does an excellent impersonation of Tina Turner. STAR TREK "Return to Tomorrow": Spock's brain is put inside of nurse Chapel's. "Turnabout Intruder": deals with a mind switch between Kirk and the scientist Dr. Janice Lester. The lady's motivation for the switch is presented as sex envy - she wanted desperately to be a man, particularly a man in a position of power. STAR TREK: THE NEW GENERATION Alien is a parasite that resides in hosts. It switches from male to female, confusing Dr. Crusher, who has fallen in love with the male version. STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO John Davidson played in drag in one episode. STUDIO 5B An ad for the 2-5-89 episode had one of the characters saying "I just booked a female impersonator, a sex surrogate, ...", but I watched that episode and saw nothing about a female impersonator. Possibly this was on a different episode. SUPERBOY On the 1-6-90 episode an android has been sent from the future to destroy Superboy. At one point the android transforms himself to look like Lana. SUPER FORCE The 2-23-91 episode has Superforce's buddy dressed as a woman. TAXI In one episode, a briefcase is left in Bobby's cab. Looking through it, the group finds it belongs to someone who seems to be really "in" with Hollywood stars. There is a costume party at "Woody's" listed in his appointment book so they decide to crash it. Alex, Tony, and Latka dress as WACS, ala the Andrew Sisters. At the end of the show, back at the garage, they even do a musical number. T. J. HOOKER One episode involves the murders of several nurses and I believe the killer dresses up as a nurse. I just caught the very end of this show. THE TODAY SHOW Weatherman Willard Scott dressed as Carmen Miranda in 1984. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT There was an episode in which Monroe falls in love with a fashion designer, played by Christopher Morley, who dressed as a woman to keep his job. TURNABOUT 26 January 1979-30 March 1979 - NBC - Half-hour sitcom about a husband and wife who woke up one morning to find themselves occupying each other's bodies. With John Schuck as Sam Alston, a sportswriter; Sharon Gless as Penny Alston, vice-president of a cosmetics firm; Richard Stahl and Bobbie Jordan as neighbors Jack and Judy Overmeyer; James Sikking as Penny's boss, Geoffrey St. James; and Bruce Kirby as Al Brennan, Sam's boss. Executive Producer: Sam Denoff for Universal TV." 21 JUMP STREET In one episode involving a boy and his granddad faking the boy's kidnapping, Johnny Depp dresses as the boy's mother for the money drop. TWIN PEAKS The 1990 season contained an interesting twist on drag. Piper Laurie, who plays Catherine Martell, was last seen, at the end of the previous season, trapped in her burning mill. A Japanese businessman, Mr. Tojimuro, listed in the credits as played by Fumio Yamaguchi, shows up to very profitable business deal with Ben Horne, who was responsible for the earlier fire. It turns out Catherine was disguised as Tojimuro in order to get revenge on Ben Horne, but in addition the producers pulled a fast one on both the audience and the rest of the cast, as none of them knew who "Fumio Yamaguchi" was either. Previews indicate that on the 12-15-90 episode a new agent, Denny (who prefers to be called Denise), joins the cast. THE TWO RONNIES Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett utilize drag on a fairly regular basis in this British comedy series. 227 I didn't see the show but the previews showed one of the ladies' husbands wearing an evening gown on the 3-31-89 episode. THE UGLIEST GIRL IN TOWN 9/26/68 - 1/30/69 Young Hollywood talent agent Timothy Blair (Peter Kastner) had fallen madly in love with an English starlet named Julie, while Julie was in town making a film. Then she flew back to London and Timothy didn't have the money to follow. Enter Timothy's brother Gene, a professional photographer assigned to shoot pictures of San Francisco hippies for a London magazine. At the last moment Gene's pictures were accidentally destroyed, and in desperation he dressed Timothy in a wig and hippie outfit and took pictures of him to send to London. London liked the pictures so much that they wanted that "girl" for a major "Twiggy"-style modelling assignment. UNDER COVER "Mr. Butterfly", 2/16/91, has Kate and Dylan in China to rescue a dissident student leader. They disguise him as a girl to get him out. URUSEI YATSURA A VERY popular Japanese animation/manga (comic book). Roughly translatesto "Those annoying aliens." A new video entitled "Nagisa no Fianse" (The Fiancee' Nagisa) is about a ghost boy who was brought up as a girl. His father is an old friend of Ryuunosuke's father. Nagisa and Ryuunosuke are engaged by their parents, to Ryuu's horror. Nagisa desperately wants to kiss Ryuu, but Ryuu won't let him/her. There's a funny scene where Nagisa and Ryuu expose their chests and realize that this *is* in fact a heterosexual match... VEGAS There was an episode in which three ladies (2 ladies and one tv) are running a scam on the Baccarat tables. The tv is Christopher Morley. There was also an episode where an old girlfriend of Dan's is dressing as a man and killing women who she considers bad for Dan. WHAT'S A GIRL LIKE YOU London Weekend's television documentary about drag entertainment. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo appeared on Shirley MacLaine's 1977 special. WILD, WILD WEST In one episode the sidekick (I can't remember his name) dresses as a saloon girl. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS In the 11/8/89 episode the character of Paul Williams was trying on a number of disguises with the help of his ex-wife. One of the disguieses was drag. Supposedly made Bunny on Santa Barbara look terribly butch. Doug Davidson is the actor. *** Commercials *** BRUT COLOGNE A pretty young woman is thinking about her man. She puts on some of his clothes and sprays Brut on herself just as the phone rings. When she answers it and finds it is him, she seems to be embarrased or flustered. Imagine if this was done with the genders reversed! ISUZU Joe Isuzu poses as his sister Joann. VAN HUESEN Shows a lovely woman wearing a man's shirt. The last line is "Van Huesen ... for a man to wear and a woman to borrow." *** Talk Shows *** PHIL DONAHUE Transexuals Fathers who've had a sex change Female Impersonators Transvestite Fashions 11-16-88 MORTON DOWNEY Transvestites 7-15-88 Transexuals LARRY KING LIVE Female Impersonators HOUR MAGAZINE Female Impersonators SALLY JESSE RAPHAEL Cross Dressers, Transexuals, and Female Impersonators 2-12-88 Sexual Identity confusion 8-8-88 FTM Transexuals 11-14-88 Gender-Bender Con Artists 4-27-89 She-males 5-15-89 Billy Tipton story and other transgenderists 8-21-89 A pregnant TS? 7-25-90 Anyone else see the Salley Jessy Raphiel show today that had a pregnant TS? Apparently she was involved with an experiment with a doctor who wanted to see if he could create invetro abdominal pregnancies. Abdominal pregnancies apparently happen fairly rarely in women and the doctor wanted to help the TS have her husbands child. She sure looked pregnant. A skeptical doctor examined her on the air and couldnt find a fetal heartbeat. Hope for her sake the baby is all right. Abdominal pregnancies are apparently very dangerous. She had already had her kidneys shut down once. Baby due in 2 months and will be taken C section. Sounds like the Alien Nation thing. GERALDO RIVERA Transexuals and their families Female Impersonators Cross Dressers and the women in their lives. 2-6-89 Transexuals who regret their decision. 2-14-89 Drag Queens on Parade 2-28-89 Hermaphroditism 7-27-89 JOAN RIVERS Mariette Pathie Allen and an audience of cders. 5-10-90 OPHRA WINFREY People Raised as the Opposite Sex Female Impersonators This is hopefully a complete list of modern (1940-1969) movies containing tv/ts themes or at least tv/ts characters. Last Update: 1/21/91 Denise ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KILLER Lou Costello delved into female impersonation in this 1949 film. The door closes on the incident with the former girl friend thinking she is watching an illicit interlude between two lovers. This is hopefully a complete list of recent (post-1970) movies containing tv/ts themes or at least tv/ts characters. Last Update: 6/4/91 Denise ALEXINA A 1985 French film telling the true story of a 19th-century hermaphrodite, raised as a woman, who scandalizes a provincial French town when "she" falls in love with another woman. It turns out "she" is really a "he". ALL OF ME Lily Tomlin's soul gets put into Steve Martin's body. Very funny. 1984 AMERICAN DREAMER An 80's movie starring JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti. JoBeth is a housewife who enters a contest where the person who writes the best "Rebecca Wright" (a marvelous woman detective) short story wins a trip to Paris. The film opens with a sequence which turns out to be her imagining the story she is writing. Rebecca captures the murderer on a train and it turns out to be a guy disguised as a woman. 1984 AND JUSTICE FOR ALL This 1979 film opens with a black transvestite being put in jail for attempted robbery of a taxi driver. Also has a couple of other TV prostitutes. 1984 ANOTHER CHANCE Has a scene where a dog, trained to pickup girls, picks up a tv. APARTMENT ZERO A 1989 black comedy thriller about a twisted relationship between two men who share an apartment in Buenos Aires. It's awash in sexual paranoia and death squad politics. Stars Colin Firth and Hart Bochner. One of the supporting characters in the apartments in a sad, ladylike tv. ARMED AND DANGEROUS A 1986 film starring John Candy and Eugene Levy as an ex-cop and a lawyer who take jobs as security guards. Features John Candy in drag. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 WAYS A really poor 1988 comedy that I suspect went straight to video. Philip Quast stars as Wally who in trying to recover his stolen banana-shaped bus goes through all kinds of crazy adventures and impersonates everything from Elvis to a geisha. AVENGING ANGEL Sequel to Angel. 1985 BACHELOR PARTY Starring Tom Hanks. Look for the Marilyn lookalike, who's also a BMW mechanic. 1984 BACK TO THE FUTURE II In this 1989 sequel Michael J. Fox portrays not only Marty but also Marty Jr. and - briefly - Marty's daughter Marlene. BANANAS 1971. Cut from the final print was a scene in which Woody Allen masqueraded as a bewitching senorita. BETTY BLUE A French movie. Near the end the male lead dresses as a woman in order to visit the female lead in the hospital. 1986 BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS Russ Meyer's Epic. One of the male characters turns out to have breasts. 1970 BREAKOUT Starring Charles Bronson and Robert Duvall. There had been an article about him several years before in the old "Female Mimics" magazine (now "Female Mimics International"). Also in one sequence, the mc (Joel Grey) dresses up as a woman for a skit. 1972 CALIGULA The infamous 1979 Penthouse movie starring Malcolm McDowell and Peter O'Toole. At one point, Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) decides he is no longer content to be the god Caligula. CAT o' NINE TAILS Starring James Franciscus and Karl Malden. A violent murder mystery with a dynamite scene in a gay bar full of delectable queens. 1971 THE CHRISTINE JORGENSEN STORY A fairly low-budget, somewhat poorly made attempt to capture the original sex-change's own story for the screen. Based on her autobiography. Eddie Frank played George as a child, John Hansen played Christine as a grownup. 1970 CIRCUS This is a wonderful film for lots of reasons but one scene in particular stunned me. It showed a circus family performing equestrian acrobatics and it was apparent that the star was the little girl, who must have been about 10. She was so pretty, with blonde hair and wearing a beautiful dress, riding on a horse. A rope tied to a harness around her waist protected her from injury if she fell. Well, she did fall and as she swung through the air her long blonde hair fell off!!! It was a wig and she was actually a little boy. It was all part of the act. CLEO/LEO Erstwhile erotica director Chuck Vincent produced, wrote and directed this 1989 "sex reversal" comedy. Leo is a cigar-chomping, male-chauvinist factory owner who falls into the river after being shot by a "pig" hating woman. He later crawls out of the water as Cleo, a sexy, gentle woman who lets him see how the other half lives and what a jerk he had been. Cleo starts taking over more and more and eventually falls in love with Bob. Unfortunately, Cleo got hired as a secretary at Leo's old company and had been trying to buy up all the stock. His/her evil nephew has her kidnapped and thrown into the water at, you guessed it, the same place Leo fell in earlier. Needless to say, Leo crawls back out a changed man. Much more sensitive and gentle due to Cleo's influence, he's actually still in love with Bob. Since Leo's alive, the woman who shot him is released and she waits in his apartment and empties her gun into him. Unexplainedly Cleo is at her desk again the next day and everyone lives happily ever after. Jane Hamilton stars as Cleo and Scott Baker as Leo. Not great but we'd all be glad to come back looking like Cleo, I imagine. The only "drag" scene is after Cleo is thrown in to drown and Leo crawls back out in Cleo's clothes. THE COCA-COLA KID In this 1985 film, Eric Roberts is tricked into attending a party with a bunch of guys in drag. COME BACK TO FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN A 1982 film, based on the play, with Karen Black as woman at reunion who no one can recall. She turns out to be a transsexual who was once Joe, the only male member of the fan club. The irony rests in the fact that the women have built their lives and their dreams around men, how to attract them, how to keep them, how to bring them back, while the only man in the film has spent his life learning how to be a woman. COMING TO AMERICA Eddie Murphy's recent hit, with Arsenio Hall as Eddie's date. 1988 THE COVER GIRL AND THE COP A 1989 tv-movie starring Julia Duffy. All the great fighters are going to the castle to fight, to see who is the best. This is a ploy by the evil sorcerer to kill all the great fighters. Deathstalker is among them. DECEPTIONS A 1990 (video release only?) film starring Harry Hamlin, Robert Davi, and Nicollette Sheridan. Hamlin and Davi are cops who investigate the accidental shooting of Sheridan's husband. Turns out to be a very twisted and elaborate murder scheme, which includes an actor dressing as a pretty blonde, the supposed "other woman." DESPERATE LIVING Ducking a murder rap, a deranged heiress and her obese maid flee to the monarchy of Queen Carlotta. No Divine in this one, but does include transvestism, the depiction of which is very demeaning and offensive. 1977 DOG DAY AFTERNOON Starring Al Pacino. Based on actual events. Pacino attempts, unsuccessfully, to hold up a bank to obtain the money necessary for his transexual girl friend's sex change operation. 1975 DR. CALIGARI A bizarre 1990 film about an unusual sex therapist. She injects brain fluid from a nymphomaniac into a man, turning him into a transvestite. DR. JECKYL AND SISTER HYDE Starring Martine Bestwicke. The ultimate tv/ts fantasy! Martine plays Sister Hyde, who emerges when the doctor experiments with female hormones. The transformation scenes are very, very well done, and the surrounding story, involving the search for the Ripper is suspensful. 1972 DR. OTTO AND THE RIDDLE OF THE GLOOM BEAM Jim Varney's first movie. (I suspect it was never released to the theatres.) A really silly, bad movie. Varney plays numerous characters, including an old woman. 1986 DRAGNET In the 1988 film, at the end Tom Hanks rides up on the back of a beautiful female cop's motorcycle. When he gets off she asks if he'll be over that night and he says he has to, he's wearing her underwear. DRAGONSLAYER A 1981 Fantasy-Adventure. FEMALE TROUBLES Divine plays two roles, Dawn Davenport and Earl Peterson, and gets to fall in love with himself in this John Waters film. 1974 FIND THE LADY Comedy with John Candy as a bumbling detective trying to find a kidnapped lady. Howie dresses up as the maid. 1986 FORTUNE AND MEN'S EYES 1971 Homosexuality in prison is the theme. Michael Greer played Queenie, an uninhibited homosexual who entertains fellow prisoners with a drag show. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY Starring Roger Moore. Good action, funny dialogue, terrific locations and scenery, includingthe bevy of Bond Girls, one of whom is a post-operative transsexual in real life. 1981 FRANKENHOOKER Very bizarre cultish movie about a guy who collects parts of hookers to reconstruct a body for his fiancee who was chopped to bits by a runaway lawnmower. The twist at the end is his head being put on a rebuilt body that in mostly parts from women. FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN Has Chrisopher Lee, I think in it. He is a scientist who believes that you can trap a persons soul after death in an electrical field. He does this to a man who was wrongly killed. He then waits for a body. It turns out to be the woman he was with the night he was accused of killing someone. She was pretty, but somewhat crippled. The doctor fixes that and puts the soul of the man in the womens body. Then it very erotically fondles its body's breasts. 1987 HOLLYWOOD VICE SQUAD Low budget crime story, with many transgendered characters. A standard odd-couple buddy-comedy formula: introvert and extrovert clash, bond, achieve happy medium. Turner (Coltrane) manipulates Renzo (Riley) for his own benefit but also tries to bring him out of his shell and make him dream a little bigger. It all converges at La Traviata, with Renzo on stage in a dress and blond wig, singing an aria while his girlfriend and hockey pals look on, pleasantly surprised. PINK PANTHER MOVIES - VARIOUS Starring Peter Sellers. Farsical slapstick humor, often very funny. The humor often centers on the inspector's confusion, and he is often confused by female impersonators. James and his mother leave John in the living room and go into the kitchen. At that point a tall, very sexily dressed woman comes down the stairs and finds John. She starts making eyes at him, goes to him, embraces him, and pushes him backwards onto the couch where she proceeds to kiss and fondle him. Suddenly James and his mother appear from the kitchen and decorum returns to the two on the couch. James spies the lady on the couch and goes over, greeting his "father." James then proceeds to explain to John about his father's mid-life crisis and trip to Sweden for "the OP." 1987 The woman speaks softly and has a somewhat husky voice. She is played in the movie by Dyanne Thorne. Some people think she might be a ts. RED HEAT 1988 police action film with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi. One of the Russian criminals is killed in the hospital by a fairly attractive nurse who is really a man. A REFLECTION OF FEAR In William Fraker's 1973 film, Sondra Locke plays a psychotic young girl who is eventually revealed to be a male raised as a girl by his mother. One of the girls is from a mob family and one of the guys in the family dresses up as a girl to get into the girls' locker room. SPRING FEVER USA A pretty cheaply-made 1989 tittilation movie. Very little plot, lots of pretty women. There is one interesting scene. The male lead and a female helper are searching for his kidnapped girl friend. They're in some store and he tells two young salesgirls he wants some lingerie. They get pretty excited and start talking back and forth about all the things they can do with him. They seem rather disappointed to learn that he wants it for his friend, not himself. STICKY FINGERS A 1988 movie starring Helen Slater and Melanie Mayron. A modern retelling of Some Like It Hot. One guy plays Robert/Roberta throughout this year's game. THE STUNT MAN Starring Peter O'Toole. An interesting, confusing film, where nothing seen should be believed. From the book by Roland Topor. 1976 THAT SINKING FEELING The low-budget first feature by ill Forsyth, the director of "Gregory's Girl," "Local Hero," "Housekeeping" and "Breaking In." "That Sinking Feeling" is a shaggy dog of a movie, about a group of unemployed adolescents' loopy heist of a plumbing supply warehouse. Contains a character who for the purposes of plot has to dress up like a girl. Unlike a film like "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot," for example, where Jeff Bridges oh so reluctantly dons drag in order to divert the night watchman, Forsyth has the wit to make his character a latent TV who enjoys becoming a girl. I've never seen Tvism expressed so innocently, so free of the smirking judgment we're used to and that's exactly the root of Forsyth's gentle humor: he laughs with a loving eye.
